This WebQuest was designed for Year 5 using the Place and Space Strand from the Essential Learnings in the Key Learning Area of Studies or Society and Environment (SOSE). This WebQuest was created to develop students knowledge of natural resources and the impacts they can have on the human race when mismanaged.
This WebQuest also intergrates skills from other Key Learning Areas. It draws on the students skills from Technology and also the knowledge that they have gained through English about Persuasive articles.
Upon completion of this WebQuest students will be able to;
- Demonstrate an understanding of a particular natural resource
- Create a persuasive speech including the use of persuasive features
- Create a management plan for a natural resource
Essential Learnings;
Ways of Working:
- pose and refine questions for investigations
- collect and organise information and evidence
- reflect on and identify personal actions and those of others to clarify values associated with social justice, the democratic process, sustainability and peace
Knowledge and Understanding;
Place and space
Environments are defined and changed by interactions between people and places.
• Interactions between people and places affect the physical features of the land, biodiversity, water and atmosphere
e.g. population increases that cause overcrowding, habitat removal, water shortages and air pollution.
• Sustainability of local natural, social and built environments can be influenced by positive and negative attitudes and behaviours
e.g. positive responses to water management can influence the quality of river systems; negative responses to town planning principles can lead to traffic problems.

The TELSTAR Inquiry Model was used when planning this unit. The following link contains the planning model and shows all key questions and provides a brief overview of each Inquiry phase.

Habits of Mind
Thinking and communicating with clarity and precision:
For the summative task, students will be required to construct and present, to a specified audience, a persuasive speech about the management of their chosen natural resource. This will give students the opportunity to demonstrate their speaking skills.
Thinking Interdependently:
Students are required to work with a peer to complete the assigned tasks. Working in groups will allow the students to equally contribute their ideas when completing the learning journey and their summative task.
Higher Order Thinking
Evaluation:
Students will reflect on the knowledge gained throughout this WebQuest by completing an Individual reflection piece. Students will reflect on new knowledge gained, the choices made by their pair and if they feel their attitudes and ways of life have changed to help appreciate and maintain a natural resource.
Synthesis:
Students will construct a persuasive article. This written piece will be written once students have made a plan of their article and all necessary research and activities have been completed. This will then be presented as an oral piece.
Analysis:
Students will analyse and sift through articles, searching for the relevant information that needs to be incorporated into their persuasive piece.
Application:
Students will demonstrate the new knowledge gained throughout this WebQuest by recording their answers in response to different aspects of natural resources and its management.
Comprehension:
Students will actively participate as a member of their pair in gathering and interpreting the information gained through informational articles.
Knowledge:
Students will examine maps and locations of where their particular natural resource can be found. Students will then answer questions relating to these locations.
